The chances are pretty high that as someone reading this, you have some sort of social media account where you can follow people and others can do the same to you. WordPress is no exception. Many of the other big name social media sites also use followers and following; Twitter, Instagram, Facebook (kinda), and so on. It’s no surprise then, that the number of followers becomes more than just a number. It slowly defines you, whether consciously or subconsciously.
After all, what easier way is there to determine your popularity than to see the number of followers you have? It becomes an obession, to some people, such as my friend. I’ve seen websites ‘sell followers’, where you pay a fixed sum and you get a corresponding increase in followers. Of course, many will dismiss that as cheating, but that’s not really the main issue here.
